DVD shows students how to avoid being a crime victim

PREVENTING crime and personal safety is the main feature of a new DVD designed to help students at university in Hampshire.

The 20-minute Safer Students DVD was unveiled at Southampton's Harbour Lights cinema, where crowds of students and police gathered with representatives from Solent University and the Universities of Southampton and Portsmouth.

Produced by CityEye, the DVD features advice on how to stay safe and avoid becoming a victim of robbery, burglary, drink-spiking and sexual assault.

Students are often more vulnerable to criminals as they move to a new area or leave home for the first time.

Sarah Steege, crime prevention officer with Southampton police, said it is hoped that the DVD will raise awareness of the issues.

She said: "Providing key crime prevention messages in a way that students will enjoy will hopefully encourage more people to think carefully about their day-to-day lives and reduce the chance of them being victims of crime."
