SAINTS have today released
tantalising new images of
next season's Umbro kit.
Andrew Surman is seen
modelling the new home
strip but with the shirt covered
by it's release date -
June 13 - with an away kit,
two goalkeeper kits and an
extensive range of training
and bench wear also being
released this summer.
The new home kit will be
unveiled and available to
pre-order at 10am on May 14
and available to buy in the
club stores at 9am on Friday,
June 13.
The strip will be the first
manufactured by Umbro as
part of the agreement which
has confirmed the sportswear
company as the club's
official kit supplier for the
next five seasons.
Launch dates for the away
strip and training kit will be
made as soon as the details
are finalised.
The club has also made a
change to the kit cycle and all
future kits will now be used
for one season.
Head of retail Leighton
Mitchell said: "We have
made the decision
to move to a one
year kit cycle for a
number of reasons.
"Firstly the
08/09 season is the
last in the current
shirt sponsorship
agreement with
Flybe and at this
point in time we
cannot confirm
who the shirt
sponsors will be
for the 09/10 season.
"Secondly, a one year cycle
brings the club in line with
other Umbro contracted
clubs and many Premier and
Football League clubs. A one
year kit cycle will also help
provide vital extra revenue
to the club.
"Prices will be the same for
both home and away kits
with infant kits starting at
£20, junior kits from
£25 including shirts,
shorts and socks and
adult shirts starting at
£40 for the short sleeve
version.
"We have an exclusive
arrangement with
Umbro which means
that all Saints kits and
associated apparel will
continue to only be
available to purchase
in the club's stores and
will not be available to
purchase in high street
sports retailers. This means
that profit made from the
sale of merchandise will be
invested directly back into
the club."

Why don't they have the old style striped shirt and stick to it. Make it a tradition. The income from the fans is a two edged sword, many could, as I have done, say no thanks, I'm not a cash cow for the club.

I like the look of this kit (from what I can see of it) & I'm happy that a name brand like Umbro are making our kits. Fair enough the sponsorship deal with Flybe runs out next year, but a starting price of £40 for a one year shirt is taking the mickey. If they priced them at around £30, as they have done with recent away shirts, I'm sure they would make up the money by selling more. I love Saints, but I'm not made of money. After harking on about the Dell spirit & how important the fans are, this is how they repay us, thanks Saints.

I know SFC needs the money, but if they're gonna use one shirt per season, at least keep the cost down.

The club is making a VERY BIG finacial mistake!
They have a exclusive clause to sale only from the club shop, to make more profit! This is so small minded.
The shirts are made by Umbro now and Southampton should of got a percent arrange on how many they sale nation, and internationaly.
For Saints fans living in Southampton, I can see the sense on making sure that people can only buy from the Saints shop. Though the poteintal selling power out strips just Saints fans, and I wish the club would wake up to this.
For one example, many foreign football fans will come to london looking to buy English football shirts. Yes most will be showen Man U shirts by the shop assitant, though many will look for colour and styling. Basically a nice looking English shirt. Some request something different from the norm. The bottom line is if our shirt is in every possible national and international shop, it is there to be seen and brought, and if it not in sight we miss out big time!
If you go to London and go to Carnaby street or Lillywhites in Piccadilly for example, they hold every single shirt in the top two leagues including Hull, except Southampton!

If you don't like the price then don't buy.
If you can afford and want to provide some additional income to the club then go ahead.

The old Keegan Kit had 3 different sponsors + 1 year with NO sponsor (over 5 years), so the sponsorship argument is rubbish. This is just profiteering.

In response to some of you... I'm fully aware that the shirt is not a compulsory purchase, but I do think £40 a season is overpriced. I have owned every home shirt since I was a kid & was looking forward to buyig this one & the ones after it, but I think they are pricing some people out. I am not moaning just calmly voicing my opinion.

We all want our clubs to sell well, but be realistic, your team has rarely appeared on international TV for a while now, and those appearances have hardly made football fans want to dash out a buy a shirt!
The person in charge of your merchandising uses his head when he plans a selling campaign, whereas you would use your heart!

I was prepared to help the club and buy the new shirt but will not be doing this now as it is too much in my opinion. I would have paid £30 but that is my top price. The club therefore have lost out on 2 lots of £30 over the next 2 years or 1 lot of £40.
What is also bad business is not ending the shirt and sponsorship deals at the same time. I know this may be be unavoidable to a certain degree but I don't recall it being a problem in the 80's and 90's. Funny that isn't it?

I presume using a big manufacturer instead of our own brand is good business, but god knows how? Just how much will the club get for each shirt sold? They're probably paying a lump sum up front which will help fund the club through the summer, which must make good business sense! Aren't i clever? I've answered my own question. Pearson should stay! £40 is alot for just a year! But we have had a lot of Shirts only lasting a year costing £30/35! The UEFA shirt, last seasons black kit to name a few

Umbro are a good manufacturer of kits, looking at our past history it would be good to have a reputable firm making it.

That's exactly what I will be doing. But with the shirts going out of fashion after just 12 months I will just keep the one that I have from the last few seasons.
What I'm trying to point out is that, in my opinion, the shirt price is too high so I will not pay for it. It's called price elasticity my boy.

I have a strong opinion about this though. One shirt per year is wrong in so many ways and football clubs shouldn't be allowed to get away with it.
Funny really, just come back from the Somerset v Hampshire cricket match. A good honest sport where fans get value for money. £12 for a day pass, superb!
