Stern John the hero as Saints stay up
 |
| Stern John has just thrust Saints level this afternoon |
STERN John scored twice and was sent off as Saints secured their Championship status in dramatic style at St Mary's today.
There were scenes of celebration as Saints stayed up - and sent Leicester down instead - by beating Sheffield United 3-2, only their fourth league win in 25 games.
But Saints had to come from behind before claiming the win which sees them avoid a drop into the third tier of English football.
Marek Saganowski levelled just before half-time with his first goal since September, and John fired Saints in front in the second period.
Saints were back in the drop zone when United sub Jon Stead levelld on 65 minutes, only for John to net his 20th league goal of the season four minutes later.
John was dismissed 10 minutes from time for his second bookable offence - a foul, having been cautioned the first time for celebrating his opening goal.

Whoever is in charge next year we must never be in this position again. Let the rebuild begin now. Come on you Saints (and Come on you Cardiff for a good end to the season)

Easy Easy we even finished above Coventry.
I must admit I was very down when Stead Scored and worried when John was sent off.
After a dreadful season I am now on a high.
We need a proper defence for the coming season Its a pity that Richard Wright will probably leave us he was my man of the season.

A brilliant win today, but before we get too carried away with talk of promotion, we will have to see what magic Rupert can weave in terms of investment. Relegation would have meant oblivion, but staying up will almost certainly see the dismantling of the current team and its replacement with a blend of old pros and academy youngsters. With the right man at the helm this may be a success. With the wrong one, we could be back here again at the end of next season.

Sat here on our way home after one pint outside your ground.
Thought i'd just say well done saints. Great game and brilliant support and the place was electric.
Been to most grounds and apart from the big four, though not the biggest, you were the best crowd myself and the lads have seen.
Hope to see you next year in the Premiership. Can see why they call you pride of the South.
Best Regards Ronnie.

Went to St Marys after meeting the Sheffield lads. Sat with the boys from both sides in the town for a few jars. Had highs and lows throughout the game. I love Sheffield but all the boys are in agreement that you made it like a cup final. No sad nasty stuff like that shower of s__t down the road. Just good old fashion banter and a beer.
You certainly deserved it, and no real disappointment here as like cliche goes, football was the winner. Richie.

I have supported the saints since the 1950's and today's match was more important to me than the excitement of the heady day's of 1976. We have now got to get things really sorted out at the very top to get the stability required to have a successful season for 2008/9.
I also want to thank Sheffield's "Ronnie" for his very kind words. Say wot you feel Ronnie.

What a great game, one of the best I have ever been too, the atmposphere was even better than last year when we secured a place in the play-offs. I'm glad we payed a tribute to the city and the club today infront of the United fans and have shut up the majority of our critics.
It was a shame John got sent off although the last 3 minutes were literally nail biting, I have never bitten my nails before but was having a nice nibble throughout the game especially the end.
Thanks for keeping us up Nigel and well done to both the team and us fans COYR

Well done Mr Pearson, now do us a big favour and sign Richard Wright on a permanent transfer, whatever it costs it will be worth it next season. Please take a look at some of the 'reserves', who appear to have performed more consistently than their senior counterparts: Baseya, Lancashire, McGoldrick, Lallana etc., there are many old 'lags' coasting home to retirement in the senior squad. Good luck.

Well done to Nigel Pearson for getting the players to play with some passion. The fact the game only kept us in the Chamipionship allows us to build for the future, relegation would have been so difficult to get back from. Yet agaibn we showed the potential with full house, great atmosphere and together we managed the win under pressure. Rupert please note, don't change the manager or the fans will this time hound you out of the club forever. Greatest tribute to Pearson is the performances of Euell and Jermaine Wright who both looked awful under Burley but in the last 10 games have been outstanding.
Full marks to Sheff Utd who really came and made a game of it, just greatful Beattie wasn't fit!

All I can say is that but for Leon Crouch and Laurie M bringing in Nigel Pearson, we were doomed.Lowe and Wilde are the beneficiaries of this excellent choice of a Manager.
Had we been relegated as almost certainly would have happened but for Nigel Pearson achieving the following:
1. Generating motivation and belief amongst the squad.
2. Improving the fitness levels
3.Gaining the respect for fairness ,something Burley did not have.
Players such as Vignal and Licka were totally ignored by Burley and both made a contribution and Euell and Wright were the heroes after both had been booed by their own fans for several weeks. This is what can be described as getting the best out of your players knowing what they are really capable of.
4.Nigel Pearson also brought in Wright(What a fantastic goalie), Perry and Lucketti all of whom played a big part .
All I can say is that realistically Lowe/Wilde have the support of no more than 30% of the fans while Nigel Pearson has 90% of the fans behind him.
On this basis , if Rupert Lowe wants to improve his popularity then I think he would be very prudent to continue with Nigel Pearson, who has done more than enough to make the job his.
Its so sad that the Boardroom is where all the problems are and the power struggle that we have witnessed is disrupting the progress that Nigel Pearson has accomplished in starting to rebuild our club.
Please Mr Lowe /Mr Wilde allow Nigel Pearson to continue to accomplish as we were doomed to relegation when he came aboard and he is the prime reason we're still in the Championship.

Kids - Stay in school or you may turn out like 'Happy Chappy'. We wouldn't want that now would we?
Congratulations to Nigel Pearson, you deserve this small taste of success and I wish you well for next season.
Now let's forget this season ever happened and regroup for the next campaign. It was nice to have that feeling of being a proud Saints fan again. It's been a long time....

Well done Saints, you saved the best 'til last. The fans gave everything, so now the Board need to give something back in return. How about:
1. Give Nigel Pearson a proper contract. The man performed a miracle with no transfer money or window to work with, and some of the better players taken away from under his nose before he'd even had a chance to look at them. No-one could have done any more.
2. Give him some money to build his own team.
3. Give Glenn Hoddle a very wide berth. The last thing we need now is his fussy, over-complicated version of football.
And if you're still in a giving mood, how about giving West Ham a call about a permanent move for that superb goalkeeper they loaned us?

I dont think many people me included thought he would take us into the relegation places but not beating Coventry and Burnley nearly cost us Championship Status.
3 Wins 7 Draws 3 Losses 16 points
I dont really know if he is the man to guide us upwards only time will tell but he should be thanked for the team getting four points in the last two games.
I would not be happy if we only had 16 points after 11 games next season.
I feel the key to next season is whether Saga can play regularly and score goals and the recruitment of both a quality Centre Back and quality right Full Back

Can we all stop this pathetic argueing? some of the insults are going too far now and we're forgetting what was important about today - our great club doing us proud!
The atmosphere was electric today and we should all be proud of how we helped cheer the team on. Thanks to NP who brought in the three players who kept us up, Perry, Lucketti and Wright, and of course guided us to some good performances and vital results.
Now we need to use the summer to sort out the off-field goings on and push on for promotion next season!

I dont think many people me included thought he would take us into the relegation places but not beating Coventry and Burnley nearly cost us Championship Status. 3 Wins 7 Draws 3 Losses 16 points I dont really know if he is the man to guide us upwards only time will tell but he should be thanked for the team getting four points in the last two games. I would not be happy if we only had 16 points after 11 games next season. I feel the key to next season is whether Saga can play regularly and score goals and the recruitment of both a quality Centre Back and quality right Full Back [/quote] Give me a break. Pearson was superb. The mess he walked into was Burleys's - his players and nobody elses. Pearson brought in 3 fantastic loan signings and did something Burley didn't - played Saganowski. The way he has the team playing and working hard is something sorely lacking during Burley's tenure.
PS. Watched Beckham play here last night and score 2 great goals - can't we sign him?

However I am not certain yet regarding Pearson other teams with new managers like Crystal Palace Sheff Utd and Preston performed a lot better.
Dont get me wrong I think Pearson did an OK job but I dont know what should be done if after 11 games next season we have only eleven points.

Stern John has been our saviour, a deciple of God sent from a higher place to save our saints. Too get 19 goals which have single handedly helped keep us in the CCC is a huge achivement. Nigel Pearson must now be given the job of manager as he has proved himself competant in the job. NP has motivated and got the players playing real football and as a team, he has turned them from allsorts to players playing like they want to achive thier best. NP has made some defining loan buys and some great tactics and subs. The Bristol City, Charlton, WBA and Sheffield United games have been fantastic performances (promotion type if we played like that all season)and produced a boost to the fans who ensured a atmospher of the highest order. The Saints fans and the players have done the business and that down to the manager who allways confirmed the belife that Saints will stay up. Give Nigeal pearson the job, invest in some players, ensure contracts are completed and keep our new talent and lets get promoted next season.

I for one am hoping Lowes return signals the return of Hoddle and a true chance of investment and a return to the premiership as with Pearson i dont thhink thats achievable!
All I can say is thanks for the stop gap Nigel and good luck for the future.
