forced to wait at
least six months to
find out who will
be charged to park
outside their homes.
That's because the councillors
behind the controversial
scheme for
Southampton have not set
themselves any timescale.
A week after the city council's
Cabinet gave the goahead
for staff to look into
charging residents to park
outside their own homes it
is still not known how much
it will cost.
Under the proposed parking
overhaul, residents living
in parking zones will
have to pay for all parking
permits - the first is currently
free.
The council also wants to
create more paid-for residential
parking zones across
Southampton outside the
city centre.
Meanwhile city centre residents
will be encouraged to
use the multi-storey car
parks which cost £2 a night.
And on Saturday the Daily
Echo revealed how residents
may not be guaranteed a
space - even if they do pay
for a permit.
Since councillors unveiled
the scheme dozens more
people have signed up to The
Daily Echo's Parking Mad
Campaign calling on the
council to rethink its unpopular
plans.
Jerry Gillen, chairman of
the Highfield Residents'
Association, said most of
his members would be
opposed to paying around
£50 for their first permit.
The association, representing
about 2,000 people
living close to the university,
is currently applying for a
residents' parking scheme
for Brookvale Road and surrounding
roads.
Many residents are unable
to park on the roads and
have difficulty getting out of
their driveways because of
students' cars.
Mr Gillen said: "Many residents
in Highfield would be
against paying for permits.
"Residents here also often
pay the higher rates of
council tax but do not see
the council spending money
on the area."
The Labour and Lib Dem
Cabinet has agreed to bring
in the charges following recommendations
from transport
consultant Halcrow.
It found residents' parking
schemes were having to be
subsidised by on-street
parking machines.
The Cabinet agreed they
should be self-funding.
Lib Dem councillor Jill
Baston, Cabinet member for
transport, said: "We don't
have any detailed plans
drawn up for how the strategy
will be implemented.
This is work in hand."
"We've got no intention of
suddenly introducing new
charges - it could be six
months to a year. We don't
have a time line on any of
the recommendations."
Cllr Baston also said the
first paid for permit would
probably be cheaper than
the second - which costs £57.
She said it was fairer to
charge residents who benefit
from parking zones
rather than every taxpayer.

Democracy appears to be working. Of course, in 6 months time we'll have a totally different council as people won't forget this despite the delay. As last year the Lib Dems lost a seat in Swaythling over the traveller's site now they will pay the price in Portswood this time around.

Just shows that nulab are no different to the old. Tax the hard working to the hilt, which prevents working hard to better yourself. Best bet is to go on benefits and get a council house. why should people have to pay to park in front of there own houses, there are all ready enough taxs, everything gose up, but not the wages, i have a drive but still get blocked in or cant get in, i have my nan at home whos in a wheel chair, but becouse we have a drive we cant even have a disabled space out side our own house, she cant get in the car when it is in the drive as there is not enought room, so i have to park down the rd normaly, just up the rd there are permit holders which dose work very well, but of course now every one from students to school runs and people visiting the doctors surgury park in our bit of rd,i dont agree with paying to park out side your own hose, why dont they build more car parks to cater for the city, they keep exspanding in the city but not thinking of where people can park

This means New Labour & LibDems will be able to mislead people for May elections. They will be able to hide behind the excuse that no decision has yet been made and promise every area that they may not be charged i.e. 'Divide & Rule'
Don't forget there is no election next year so by the time next election will take place all this would have become an old story even for the Echo.
So only way to make mark on this issue is to act now and demand answers before casting votes in May. But nobody is likely to get an honest answer...

Why do some people bully?
There are a lot of reasons why some people bully.
They may see it as a way of being popular, or making themselves look tough and in charge.
Some bullies do it to get attention or things, or to make other people afraid of them. Others might be jealous of the person they are bullying or trying to hide something that is wrong with them.

If the council needs to subsidise residential parking and if they are trying to pander to the green agenda by reducing cars on the roads what about first pass free, second pass not an automatic right only given in exceptional circumstances and charged a premium (?£100). Then the minority with two cars plus per house pay and not everyone.

Another day - another assault on the poor battered motorists.
Already hammered by road fund licence that only sees a fraction get invested in the same roads that present a daily challenge.
Now the stealth taxes roll on as they target (mostly) law abiding motorists who just grumble about it down the pub -if they can afford the beer and put up with freezing to death as they puff on their highly taxed ciggies outside.
City centre residents forced to park their vehicles in dodgy mult-storey car parks - risking door dents, theft as well as the threat of attack between the safety of their homes and vehicle location.
Great for lone women eh?
Why oh why dont us soft Brits take a leaf from other countries who do not put up with this Big Brother interference?
Speed cameras soon get taken out and any other type of Orwellian inroads to liberty

[bold]SUCKERS OF THE WORLD -UNITE!![/bold]
Another day - another assault on the poor battered motorists.
Already hammered by road fund licence that only sees a fraction get invested in the same roads that present a daily challenge.
Now the stealth taxes roll on as they target (mostly) law abiding motorists who just grumble about it down the pub -if they can afford the beer and put up with freezing to death as they puff on their highly taxed ciggies outside.
City centre residents forced to park their vehicles in dodgy mult-storey car parks - risking door dents, theft as well as the threat of attack between the safety of their homes and vehicle location.
Great for lone women eh?
Why oh why dont us soft Brits take a leaf from other countries who do not put up with this Big Brother interference?
Speed cameras soon get taken out and any other type of Orwellian inroads to liberty

Most of its population consists of cross breed NuLab & LibDems. First one has lost all its principles the second lot hardly ever had any to loose!

I have to pay for my permit and i only have one and onlty allowed one.....so i think its great the rest of you are playing catch up. Least you have the oppertunity to have two permits think yourselves lucky.
