A HAMPSHIRE MP will today present a 16,000-name petition to Parliament calling for Royal Haslar Hospital to be saved.

Peter Viggers, whose Gosport constituency includes the closure-threatened hospital, believes the site should continue to be used for health services after its facilities are moved to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham late next year.

Campaigners want to see the former military hospital used as an overspill hospital and for the treatment of service personnel.

"Support for Haslar is as strong as ever," said Mr Viggers.

"Local people believe that the Haslar facilities should remain available to local people and that the hospital should continue to support our armed forces.

"The present situation is that Gosport Borough Council is working with the Ministry of Defence to find a cost effective use of the whole site.

"The site is designated in the local plan for health and community purposes and we believe that a way ahead can be found that will fulfil local wishes."

As well as the petition, signed by 16,132 residents, a protest march has been planned to run from Gosport Town Hall on Sunday, June 29.
